Solo.io open-sources its Service Mesh Hub for microservices
Cloud-native software company Solo.io Inc. said today it’s open-sourcing an internal project called Service Mesh Hub, which provides a unified dashboard for companies that want to install, operate and extend a single service mesh or group of meshes.
Founded in 2017, Solo is a company that sells software that helps to address the challenges faced by enterprises that want to implement microservices, which are the components of modern, containerized applications that can run in multiple computing environments. It offers a variety of tools that help with this, including its main product Gloo, which streamlines the transformation of legacy applications to new infrastructures and enables management from a single system.
Solo’s second major product is its Service Mesh Hub, which helps organizations streamline the deployment, management and extensibility of any service mesh on any cloud, for any application, and is now being made available as open-source software.
Service meshes are becoming increasingly prominent in modern information technology architectures. Essentially, they’re a dedicated infrastructure layer that’s used to control service-to-service communication over a network. They provide a way for separate parts of an application to communicate with each other.
Solo founder and Chief Executive Officer Idit Levine (pictured) explained that though service meshes provide significant security, observability and control benefits, they can also be extremely complex to implement.
“The Service Mesh Hub abstracts this complexity away from the users, allowing them to quickly adopt the technologies they need,” Levine said. “We’re introducing the Service Mesh Hub as an open-source project, hoping to build a community that will help accelerate service mesh adoption and facilitate collaboration, and to make multicluster and multimesh a reality for everyone who needs it.”
The new open-source version of Service Mesh Hub also adds enterprise-grade and multi-cluster support for Istio 1.5, which is the latest version of the popular open-source service mesh developed by Google LLC.
Levine previously appeared on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the 2018 Cloud Foundry Summit, where she talked more about the company’s offerings and its commitment to open-source:
