Exploding SaaS market drives Dell’s partnership with Druva for data protection

The popularity of software-as-a-service applications in the enterprise is also requiring changes in cloud data protection.

Today, Dell Technologies Inc. launched Dell EMC PowerProtect Backup Service powered by Druva Inc. to address the need for native data protection without adding new layers of complexity for IT administrators.

“Only a couple of years ago, our focus was very much on on-premises data protection, but over the last couple of years, more workloads have shifted to the cloud and customers have started adopting SaaS applications,” said Rob Emsley (pictured, right), director of product marketing at Dell. “When it comes to protecting yourself from accidental deletion, protecting yourself from cyberthreats and cybercrime that may infect your data through malicious acts, that’s really where you need to supplement the environment the cloud providers provide you with best-in-class data protection solutions.”

Emsley spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. He was joined by Stephen Manley (pictured, left), chief technology officer of Druva, and they discussed support for popular enterprise applications through Druva’s protection solutions and providing a ready-to-go service as part of Dell’s latest offering. Protection for dispersed data

The most recent launch of Dell’s backup-as-a-service supports widely used SaaS applications, such as Microsoft Corp.’s Office 365, Google Workspace and cloud-based workloads in Salesforce.com Inc. Druva provides a subscription-based backup-as-a-service with data protection for endpoints, on-premises applications and cloud workloads.

“The market has absolutely swept in this direction,” Manley said. “For a long time, we had a cycle where application environments were consolidating a lot. We seem to be exploding out the other way to this massive sprawl of different types of applications in different places. With data sprawled everywhere, we find that customers are looking for solutions that can connect to everything.”

Mindful of the sprawl created by dispersed applications and workloads, Dell has sought to make its PowerProtect solution as easy as possible for users to implement.

“They simply point PowerProtect Backup Service at the data sources that they wish to protect,” Emsley explained. “The infrastructure is always on, ready to go. That’s one of the great advantages around a SaaS-based data protection platform. We’ve continued to double down in bringing new cloud data protection capabilities to our customers, wherever they may be.”
