The Largest Data Breaches of All Time [Infographic]
I like to post an infographic on the weekends. They gives an entirely different perspective than a blog post. Each weekend, we’ll run an infographic that tells a story about recent news and trends in the market.
Flowing Data recently posted some data that shows the largest data breaches of all time. All of these data breaches except two occurred since 2005. The recent Sony breaches inspired the graphic. Nathan Yau wanted to know how the Sony attacks compared to the largest breaches of all time. Sony has two breaches in the top 10.
More than 50% of the largest all-time data breaches were hacks. Five were due to lost data. In two cases, the data was stolen. Click image for larger view. In another graphic, Yau did a timeline of the Sony attacks this year.
The infographic from Flowing Data shows in some ways why IT infrastructures are in need of transformation. That’s illustrated with the recent RSA breach, which is causing customers to consider emerging security technologies. And that points to a huge market opening.
