HPE-Deloitte alliance targets flexible hybrid cloud solutions

The past 18 months encouraged incredible growth and transformation in the tech industry, with a rapid shift to remote work, the acceleration of digital transformations and more. This requires a significant amount of data analysis and migration, calling for assistance in securely ingesting and retaining large volumes of data.

Deloitte Consulting LLP, a global provider of financial-related services, joined forces with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. using Splunk Inc.’s platform to help clients modernize their data.

“The importance of Splunk and good log management, observability, along with all the security management and the security logs, and being able to monitor for your environment in this complex distributed environment, is critical,” said Kacy Clarke (pictured, left), managing director and chief architect at Deloitte. “And it’s just going to get more complex as we get more distributed.”

Clarke and Elias Alagna (pictured, right), chief technologist at HPE, spoke with Lisa Martin, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during last month’s Splunk .conf21 Virtual event. They discussed Deloitte and HPE’s joint solution, the importance of data security, the rise of hybrid cloud solutions and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Managing data on a global scale

Deloitte has had a historical partnership with both HPE and Splunk for years, both benefiting the organization in several ways.

“HPE GreenLake, which is hardware by subscription, the flexibility of that platform, the cost-effectiveness of the platform, to be able to run workloads like Splunk on it that are constantly changing,” Clarke said, highlighting the positives of the partnerships.

The ability to expand the environment quickly through containerized architecture is crucial, allowing them to federate workloads on-premises with workloads that are in the cloud and do so flexibly with HPE’s on-prem platform.

HPE worked with Deloitte and Intel Corp. to optimize performance, allowing the company to accelerate the ingest rate of Splunk by 17 times, according to Alagna. Optimization, however, comes with its challenges.

“We’ve also done a lot of work on the setup side. There’s a lot of complexities in running a big enterprise application like Splunk. It does a lot of great things, but with that comes some complications for sure,” Alagna said. “And so a lot of the work that we’ve done is to help really make this production-ready, at scale, disaster tolerance and bring all of those things together.”

This required work on the backend to ensure large companies are able to take advantage of the platform without the fear of losing a data center or region.
