Anthos enhancements highlight Google’s focus on building an open, transformative experience

Since its unveiling of Anthos in April 2019, Google LLC has sought to unify the management of infrastructure and applications across edge, on-premises and numerous public cloud environments based on the Google Kubernetes Engine.

More recently, the tech giant announced Anthos for Virtual Machines, which included an automated process to migrate and modernize existing applications from virtual machine environments to containers. The latest Anthos enhancements are part of the company’s strategy to make developing on Google Cloud open, easy and transformative.

“We have the platform and the infrastructure, but where Anthos really shines is that experience on top for developers and operators that can work in every environment,” said Chen Goldberg (pictured), vice president of engineering at Google. “What excites me the most is seeing others take this innovation and empower developers to make amazing or unique ideas a reality. That’s really the foundational principle for Google Cloud.”

Goldberg spoke with David Nicholson, host of SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming video studio theCUBE, and they discussed the introduction of new tools for operational tasks and Anthos’ growing adoption by enterprise customers.

Building a smooth experience

In addition to opening up Anthos for virtual machines and making the process easier for developers, Google is also providing new tools for operators. These include Managed Service for Prometheus to deliver compatibility for alerts and dashboards and Log Analytics for diagnostics and deeper insights.

“Having a smooth intuitive experience is really critical,” Goldberg said. “We don’t want our developers or operators to spend time on things that can be automated or managed by others.”

In making the Anthos announcements, Google also indicated that in the second quarter of 2021, Anthos compute under management grew more than 500% year-over-year. The company believes that customers are responding to the multiple options and flexible approach that Anthos offers, according to Goldberg.

“It’s making sure they are not locked out of innovation that happens in any cloud,” Goldberg said. “That’s a key consideration for customers when they think about their cloud strategy. They loved the experience they had on GCP, but needed to innovate elsewhere and not just on Google Cloud.”
