Google and Deloitte forge a sustainable path amidst rising carbon emissions

Technology brings with it excitement and innovation, all designated to make our daily lives easier and more entertaining, but it can also bring higher carbon emissions, contributing to the ongoing battle against climate change.

Tech giants such as Google LLC and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd, however, are teaming up to reverse these emissions and create a more sustainable yet connected world.

“Work hard, be authentic and leave things a little better than you got them,” said Jamie Sawchuk (pictured, left), global sustainability and climate leader for the Alphabet | Google Alliance at Deloitte. “That’s our job in terms of sustainability. How do we take the planet we have on a global scale and leave it a little bit better than what we received? That’s what we’re looking to do with Deloitte and Google.”

Sawchuk and Neil Gyte (pictured), director and global head of new products, business development and industry solutions at Google, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and Rob Strechay at the Google Cloud Next event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how the companies are teaming up to create a more sustainable future, pairing sustainability with economic growth, and what new technologies are being used to create and support this sustainability.  (* Disclosure below.)

Combining economic growth with a sustainability future

For Deloitte, choosing Google as a sustainability partner was a no-brainer, according to Sawchuk. Google started focusing on sustainability back in 2007 and became carbon neutral in 2019. Since then, Google is working toward becoming completely carbon-free by 2030.

“We’re helping bring the solutions to market that act on sustainability,” Sawchuk said. “If you’re looking at sustainable finance, we have a solution for you. Looking at energy transition, we have a solution for you. If you’re looking to tap into the growth market of green products, we have a solution for you, all built on Google platforms.”

Sustainability has grown into a top-three issue for C-suites, and every customer meeting that Gyte held in the past three years has touched upon sustainability. Pairing sustainability with economic growth is important, especially as it was previously hard to pair the two in recent years, he added.

I would say the advent of newer technology and Google’s cloud platform tools, like Google Earth Engine, which is our sort of planetary geospatial scale analytics platform, allow companies to be able to take action,” Gyte said. “It’s easier now than ever before to at least just start somewhere, and that’s why I think we’re starting to see significant more action from companies.

The group wrapped up the session by discussing how enabling sustainability and economic growth is only beginning. Technologies such as generative artificial intelligence are helping these goals become much more achievable, according to Gyte.

“The combination of both of those together with generative AI to be able to model out different scenarios, bring in the financials and all this different data enables you to explore millions of different permutations and scenarios to try and make more informed decisions,” he said. “We’re going to see a huge amount of change over the next years, which is going to be hugely impactful for the sustainability of cities and moving forward.”
