Biden campaign signs up for Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform
In what might seem like a surprising move, President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign today launched an account on Truth Social.
The social media platform was created by the Trump Media & Technology Group in April 2022 after former president Donald Trump found himself excommunicated from mainstream social media in 2021 following his comments on the U.S. Capitol attack.
“Well. Let’s see how this goes,” the Biden (pictured) campaign wrote in its first post to Truth Social today, under the handle @BidenHQ. Notably, the post included the words, “Converts welcome!” Although the campaign has said that the reason for joining the platform is “mostly because we thought it would be very funny,” there can be little doubt that the objective is also about accruing a few votes in what could become another very close Biden-versus-Trump election.
Indeed, officials working for the campaign told Fox News that they intend to meet “voters where they are.” One official told Fox, “Republicans can’t even agree on a Speaker of the House, so clearly, not every Republican thinks the same.” They’ve injected some troll-like hijinks into the action, using a profile picture of “Dark Brandon,” an ironic image showing the president with laser eyes, in response to the right-wing meme of “Let’s Go Brandon.”
It’s all quite silly, but it may swing some younger voters to the side of Joe Biden, whose slogan on Truth Social is his usual “the malarkey ends here.” Campaign officials told Fox they are “injecting our message” among Trump’s supporters and, with it, will combat “mis and disinformation.” The campaign added, “There’s very little ‘truth’ happening on Truth Social.”
Some of the first posts by the campaign included content that showed conservative politicians attacking Trump in areas such as the war in Israel and the federal debt. The officials explained to Fox, “We will be leveraging the fact that Republicans can sometimes be our best messengers!”
With only about 2 million users on Truth Social, the audience available from which to extract some votes is small compared with Facebook’s 3 billion users and X’s half-billion. Still, the Biden campaign officials said going into the “lion’s den” and pointing out “Republicans’ hypocrisy” will be fun. That’s not exactly how Trump’s campaign officials see it.
“Crooked Joe Biden and his team are finally acknowledging that Truth Social is hot as a pistol and the only place where real news happens,” said an official for the Trump campaign to the media. “Unfortunately for Biden, his continuation of spreading misinformation to gaslight the American people in order to distract from his disastrous record won’t work, and they’ll be ratioed to oblivion.”
