IBM creates strategic data layer to push AI innovations

In today’s computing environment, businesses must revamp their data architecture, as it’s essential not only for technological advancement, but also for enhancing enterprise capabilities and performance.

An innovative strategy is needed to integrate data from various sources, including the cloud, leveraging artificial intelligence for enhanced parallel speed performance, according to David Wohlford (pictured), worldwide senior product marketing manager for IBM Storage for AI and cloud scale at IBM.

“It’s kind of exciting because people are talking about data; it is about data,” Wohlford said. “The whole idea of AI and bringing AI innovation is bringing more data, bringing it faster so that we can get the results. We have been successful at helping customers bring the AI innovation forward to help their business grow. If I can help promote and create that strategic layer, because that’s what we want to be about, that’s what we’re trying to tell people. They need to rethink their whole data platform.”

Wohlford spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Savannah Peterson at SC23, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the importance of rethinking the data architecture based on emerging trends, such as AI, and how IBM is creating enterprise solutions. (* Disclosure below.)

How computational storage comes into play

AI requires connecting the dots, as it can’t be done on a single system and data cannot be obtained from one source. This is why computational storage comes in handy — the advantages, such as efficienty, are numerous, according to Wohlford.

“We’re the first to bring computational storage to file an object,” he said. “It’s more about bringing analytics to the AI space and obviously the generative AI. With the watsonx … we’re seeing that driving the analytics AI, the big data AI, bringing that together, tying that together into the lakehouse.”

Since storage continues to be important in the digital life equation, data processing should be fast and top notch for optimal results. As a result, IBM continues to transform the storage field as networking and server storage emerge as the holy trinity of hyperconvergence, Wohlford explained.

“We announced the fastest system in the industry for storage,” he stated. “We already are the fastest storage, but we now doubled it … we can now bring 277 gigabytes per second of our storage. You talked about having 13 million IOPS in a rack; we could put 130 million IOPS in a rack now, I mean, faster than any system out there.”
