Tailored AI for developers: How Tabnine optimizes coding with context

Tabnine Ltd. wants to offer the best AI agents in the industry, neatly wrapped up in an advanced context engine.

Tabnine originated the artificial intelligence code assistant category with its first model in 2018. Since then, the company has grown into an AI software development platform designed to meet the needs of enterprise engineering teams.

“What we uniquely offer [customers] at Tabnine is a platform that’s entirely tailored to you,” said Ameya Deshmukh (pictured), head of marketing programs at Tabnine. “They tell us what models that they’d like to use and how they’d like to deploy them. We’re focused on delivering a highly personalized experience that is totally private and totally protected, that lets them adopt AI while remaining compliant with all their organizational guidelines. I’d say the secret sauce that we have is our advanced context engine.”

Deshmukh spoke with theCUBE’s Kristen Martin for the Tech Innovation CUBEd Awards 2025 interview series, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the recent upgrades to Tabnine’s platform.

The customizable context engine

With over one million users per month, Tabnine wants its customers to have all the specialization they need. The Tabnine AI software development platform makes sure there is no trade-off between privacy, protection and performance, with an emphasis on customizing the information made accessible to AI, according to Deshmukh.

“We noticed that the majority of the [large language models] in generic AI code assistance are merely thin application layers around an LLM,” he said. “The result from that has been that enterprise usage of these tools has actually scaled tech debt, not code quality. What we’ve been really focused on as a platform is contextualizing the response and tailoring it to meet that organization’s specific code quality security, architecture and maintainability standards.”

LLMs can generate code that is intellectual property liable or vulnerable to cyberattack, so by giving customers more control over the context their models are ingesting, Tabnine is ensuring greater security, according to Deshmukh. The company recently announced new upgrades to its context engine, including a new context scoping capability and customizable code review sets. With each update to the platform, Tabnine hopes to give its customers greater flexibility. In recognition of these advancements, the company received a CUBEd “Top AI Innovation for Developers” award.

“The emergence of open-source large language models that are highly performant in 2025 has resulted in many of our enterprise customers starting fine-tuning and model customization efforts internally, where they’re developing and developing and creating their own models,” Deshmukh said. “With Tabnine, they now have the architectural freedom to input those models into our AI development platform and make use of our context engine and AI agents.”
