Fusion-io Gets Navy Seal of Approval

Salt Lake City based Fusion-io, the current leader in storage memory for shared data de-centralization, has revealed some flattering results of a study by the US Navy, saying that an average performance enhancement of 800 percent was observed when using its products versus the old-styled RAID 5 storage technology.  Fusion-io said the testing was carried out by researchers at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SSC Atlantic) in Charleston, SC.

The study published in the white paper, “Fusion-io ioDrive Performance Testing: A Comparative Study on Storage Performance Improvement using Fusion-io Technology” highlighted the importance of using Fusion-io’s based data decentralization platform compared to other technology. The study was carried out based on the criteria of performance measured sequential reading, stress testing, sequential writing, random writing and random reading. On an average 800 percent higher efficiency was seen when the test was performed while evaluating database queries using the test utility on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit Datacenter OS host server with a Fusion ioDrive along with Oracle 11g database.

“The Navy’s test results demonstrate that using storage memory to host an organization’s most critical data in the server where it is processed can greatly reduce latency and increase performance,” said Fred Vasofsky, Fusion-io Vice President of Federal System. “We are proud to be working with SSC Atlantic and other areas in the US Department of Defense to reliably decrease the time it takes to turn massive amounts of data into actionable information and help the military continue to achieve its mission by increasing IT performance and reliability while significantly reducing costs.”

Fusion-io is being investing a lot for virtualized environments, leveraging its server-attached flash storage solution.  At the recently concluded VMworld 2011 event, Fusion-io announced its newest offering, ioCache.  ioCache is integrated with Fusion-io’s hardware and ioTurbine’s software, and delivers a server-attached flash storage solution as an alternative for RAM in a data concentric virtualized application and database environment.  Fusion-io teamed up with the developer of virtualized caching software, ioTurbine, to provide improved I/O performance using ioCache technology.

Another flash storage based provider, FlashSoft, recently released SE-V for VMware to increase application performance on Windows Server in Virtual Machine environments, based on VMware vSphere.  SiliconAngle founder John Furrier also emphasized the importance of Flashsoft’s caching process, saying it could help to improve the cloud’s data process at the server level.

Fusion-io is taking the lead of fusing hardware and software to attract large customers including ISVs and developers. Wikibon CTO David Floyer documented how the use of a non-volatile NAND Flash system such as the Fusion-io system can boost server performance and increase the productivity of the business.
