Sony Connecting Ordinary TV to the World

The list of devices that are connected to the internet continues to multiply.  Each day, new developments are being discovered, getting consumers more excited as they embrace connected devices and technology.   The connected world has not just dominated the business world but has also penetrated our homes, bringing family closer and making every home the most convenient and safest place for you and your loved ones.

When we say “connected home,” the first thing one typically thinks of is the connected TV, or Smart TV, which, by the way, is rising in popularity.  However, not all consumers are ready and willing to invest in connected TVs.  Is it possible to experience the connected TV without having to spend big money?  Well, here’s some good news from Sony that every consumer would be happy to know –  You do not need to buy Bravia just to have a connected TV.

Turning an ordinary TV into a connected TV, Sony has unveiled their SMP-N200 player  during the IFA in Berlin last month.  This set-top-box is capable of rendering several connected devices, allowing users to easily upgrade any TV to a connected TV.

Sony’s streaming player has a lot of connectivity options, which include composite, component, HDMI and WiFi.  Moreover, with its DLNA capability feature, it offers the convenience of connecting and controlling a network of devices such as PCs and tablets.  The device offers the consumers a wide list and collection of online HD and 3D movies, internet radio options and of course the full Sony Entertainment Network .

“ The Streaming Player is ideal for consumers who want to upgrade to a connected television, but are happy with the TV they currently have.  Whether using it in the family room or on a secondary television in the house, this new set-top- box offers access to the full complement streaming content available from Sony, without committing to the cost of a new Bravia.” says Charles Speidel, Vice President of Sony’s Home Audio and Group.

To complete the package, Sony SMP-N200 comes with a remote control and a free download of Sony Media Remote app, available for iOS and Android-based devices.  This application shall let the users control the device with the help of their Smartphones.

Moreover, statistics show that connected TVs sell more than the game consoles, with 52 million units and 37 million units respectively – with Sony, LG, Samsung , and Panasonic as the top manufacturers of Connected TVs.  As connected TV devices grow to dominate the home, it is also expected that the gaming experience will subsequently evolve.  With a better shared family experience, better utilization of segmented time, its a simple concept of  gadgetry fun.  Indeed, connected TVs will soon become part of a powerful gaming platform.

With tight competition in this market, it was recently reported that Sony’s competitor, Samsung, is seeking developers for Smart TVs, better connecting its devices to each other.    In addition, LG’s smart move in tapping KIT Digital for connected TV push has made the competition more challenging.

The Sony SMP-N200 player, which is set to take on Roku and Apple TV, is expected to hit the U.S market by next month with a retail price around $99.99.
