Autodesk, the California-based professional 3D design and engineering software maker, is the latest vendor that has decided to venture into the cloud. It announced Autodesk Cloud today, a web-based version collection of some of the key tools and services it provides.  It also comes in a premium edition called Autodesk Subscription. Autodesk Cloud provides customers with access to additional, and more advanced services, as well as more options when it comes to what they’re paying for, and what technical support they’re getting.

Amar Hanspal, senior vice president, Platform Solutions and Emerging Business at Autodesk described Autodesk in a release, noting some of the main advantages that tend to attract enterprises to cloud services:

“Autodesk Cloud provides a powerful foundation to enable all Autodesk customers to begin using the cloud to access and store their work from anywhere; to view their work through web browsers or mobile devices; and to share their work with other users, even users without Autodesk software.”

The Autodesk Cloud bundle breaks down into several components, including a cloud-based document sharing and collaboration app, called Buzzsaw, and the Autodesk Design Review mobile application. Additional tools include the Green Building Studio and Revit Conceptual energy analysis tools, a rounded-out simulation environment for more complex designs, and online rendering features that can add more flexibility to a project and employees’ workflows.

Autodesk is entering new territories, following many other tech companies that decided to add a cloud service to their portfolio. One of the bigger companies was Apple, trying to expand its existing venture in this space with iCloud, and reportedly making efforts to buyout one of its biggest competitors.  Dropbox was apparently one of its main targets, though its $800 million bid was rejected by the company, according to Chip Hazad.
