Yahoo’s Latest Comeback: Apps And Ads
Back in September Yahoo fired CEO Carol Bartz and the company seemed to spin out of control. Though Yahoo is still CEO-less as no one seems to want to fill the position, the company is slowly trying to recover. Yahoo is still focused on advertising and marketing, and they reiterated this focus when they announced that they are going to acquire Interclick, an ad network. They will buy Interclick for $270 million and the deal will be completed early 2012.
And they’re not stopping with that. Yahoo launched Livestand, LivingAds, and IntoNow earlier this week. Livestand is a personalized “living” magazine made especially for the iPad. It is a news reader app tied with a number of publications and outlets. Since it built on HTML5, the app will work for iOS and Android though it’s only available for iOS for now.
LivingAds are ads that come with Livestand. They are creative ads that merge ads from magazines, TV and the web. And ad can as simple a photograph but when you click on an item on the photo, it tells you what brand it is or where you can buy that item. Disney and Toyota are launch partners for LivingAds.
And IntoNow is a TV app suited for Android and iOS tablets. IntoNow lets users see information about the program they are watching, tweets from actors, real-time sports update and a lot more. This takes watching TV to a whole new other level.
“Hundreds of millions of people rely on Yahoo! every day, yet no two users are alike,” said Blake Irving, EVP and chief product officer at Yahoo!, from a press event at the company’s Sunnyvale headquarters. “Today’s product launches reaffirm our commitment to personalize experiences across devices. By building these products on top of our powerful platforms with beautiful interactive design, we are getting closer to a truly ‘personal Web’ for every Yahoo! customer.”
Aside from the above mentioned products, Yahoo also launched Yahoo! Mail for iPads and Yahoo! Weather for Androids.
Yahoo’s Livestand is in direct competition with Flipboard, a news/magazine app for the iPad. As of now, they are focused on making Flipboard more of an iOS thing, but there are hints that they could push for HTML5 and Android availability.
