Top 5 Smartphone Brands @ MWC 2012

Mobile World Congress 2012 officially ended yesterday, but attendees still can’t stop gushing over the devices unveiled at the event.  Here’s a quick recap of what brands made an impression this week.

Nokia

The Finnish phone maker unveiled two smartphones worthy of praise: the Nokia 808 PureView which features a stunning 41 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and the Nokia Lumia 610 which is their affordable smartphone targeting first time smartphone users and the younger generation.

The Nokia 808 PureView, aside from the 41MP camera, features 1080p Full HD video recording with up to 4 x lossless zoom that’s smooth and completely silent, the world’s first device to include Rich Recording, the camera activates in a second, equipped with NFC technology for easy sharing, and the first Nokia smartphone to feature Dolby Headphones, and has 16GB of internal memory which can be upgraded up to 48GB via an external microSD memory card.

While the Nokia Lumia 610 is more of a social smartphone, as it quickly connects to the internet for browsing, sharing or connecting with your friends via Facebook or Twitter, and the younger generation would surely enjoy this smartphone as apsp and games are available at Xbox Live and the Marketplace.

HTC

HTC One X made a lot of heads turn at the event.  Not only does it feature a 1.5Ghz quad-core chipset with four high-performance CPU cores but its UI, HTC Sense, brings out the beauty of the smartphone in every single way.  Not only that, it’s integrated with Dropbox so you won’t ever have to worry about using up all the space in your device.  The sleek device also features 4.7 inches of 720p Super LCD 2 non-PenTile gorgeousness, Ice Cream Sandwich, 8MP rear camera with f/2.0 lens and 1080p HD video.

Sony

Sony unveiled two smarphones that looks identical at the event, the Xperia P and the Xperia U.  The Xperia U is more of a fun phone and the Xperia P a more serious one.  See, the Xperia P is cased in an aluminum body which brings out the seriousness of the device while the Xperia U has a touch of color to it.  Both devices are from Sony’s Xperia NXT Series and features the Mobile BRAVIA Engine – it brings TV to your smartphone and both features Reality Display.

But there are a few things that sets them apart.  For one, the P features  WhiteMagic technology, which enables you to view the screen clearly even when outside or in extremely bright lights.  It also has the Exmor R, a mobile image sensor that lets you take awesome photos even in low lighting.  But there’s something funky about the U that might just make you choose it over others – it has an interchangeable bottom cap so you can change the color depending on your mood or your favorite color of the day (not really sure how many colors the bottom cap comes in), and it also features a color-changing, illuminated transparent elements back up your favorite artists album art with matching colours when you browse through your music. It changes to match the shades in your photos too.  The U also features this transparent element though it’s not specified if it does the same thing.

Samsung

Crowned as the Device Manufacturer of the Year and the Samsung Galaxy SII named as the GSMA Best Smartphone, the South Korean mobile manufacturer delivered two devices: the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Galaxy Beam.   The Galaxy Note is a tablet that features the S-Pen, yes it has that dreaded stylus that has almost everyone laughing at the Galaxy Note when it launched.  Samsung really loves their stylus, er S-Pen.

Anyway, on to the Galaxy Beam.  It features a dual-core 1 GHz CPU, 4-inch, 800×480 screen, 5-megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera and runs Android 2.3.  But what sets it apart from other smartphones is the “ultra-bright,” 15-lumen projector, which lets you project a 50-inch wide image on a wall — perfect for people who love making presentations at the office or humiliating their buddies with embarrassing photos.

ASUS

ASUS unveiled the PadFone and the Transformer Pad tablet at the MWC.  The PadFone features a 4.3-in. Super Amoled HD touchscreen, a dual-core Snapdragon S processor, 8-megapixel digital camera and runs Android 4.0.  The PadFone transforms into a 3-in-1 combo of a smartphone, tablet and notebook with the PadFone Station and PadFone Station Dock.  Due out by April 2012.
