Couchbase Server 2.0: NoSQL for Documents

Couchbase just revealed the newest release of its flagship database management system.

Couch Server 2.0 includes new features designed to compliment a broader range of use cases than before, as well as major enhancements to core functionality that will improve things across the board.

One of the additions is a JSON-based data model that allows developers to customize and modify the core architecture, instead of clumsily managing multiple schemas.  Also new are the distributed indexing and querying capabilities that make the platform much more viable for content-driven projects, as well as applications that have to sort through a lot of metadata.

Perhaps most notable is something Couchbase calls “incremental map reduce,” a component that offers enough real-time analytics support to accommodate certain core applications, such as online scoreboards.

In addition to these updates, v2.0 has been improved to be more resilient and efficient. The new releases automates replication between remote sites to ensure better disaster recovery.

Ortbiz’s site reliability team lead Steven Young is impressed.

“As we look at building and expanding our highly-available applications across multiple data centers, Couchbase Server 2.0’s cross data center replication will allow us to easily distribute information across multiple data centers,” Young said.

“It will not only protect us against data center outages but also bring data closer to our users for a better user experience. In addition, Couchbase Server 2.0 builds on to the key-value capabilities, and adds indexing and querying that will allow us to create richer applications for our users.”

Couchbase’s NoSQL vision revolves around enterprises that rely primary on their on-premise IT infrastructure, but some are taking a different approach. Database startup Garantia Data chose to focus its attention to the cloud, and recently extended its commercial key store system to Heroku, AppFog and AppHarbor.
