What to Expect at CES 2013: Flexible Smartphones, Laser TVs, Connected Polaroids

The world did not end last Friday. I’m sure a lot if people were disappointed but hey, life goes on right?  Don’t be too glum about it, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2013, the International Consumer Electronics Show, wherein every major tech company will make us drool over their latest innovations and products.

So what can we expect at CES 2013?

Samsung Display is said to be bringing two flexible panels, one for a mobile device, the other for a smart TV.  The first measures 5.5 inches and has an HD resolution of 1,280 x 720 with 267 pixels per inch.  The second one measures 55 inches and will be used for Samsung’s HD TV sets.

Samsung first showcased flexible screens during CES 2011, but we are yet to see devices that use these screens: I’m talking about bendable tablets or smartphones.  I’m sure some of us, especially those who have the habit of putting our phones in the back pockets of our pants and sitting on them, would love to have a device that follows the contour of our body.

LG is bringing their “Hecto” laser TV projector to the party.  The laser TV projector is said to be able to recreate a 100-inch screen from just 22 inches away, has a built-in digital tuner and 10w speakers, three HDMI inputs, an RS-232 port and Smart TV capabilities controlled by LG’s Magic Remote.

Aside from the laser projector, the entertainment system will also display a new Google TV that will come pre-installed with the OnLive gaming platform,  a full Web browser and a redesigned remote equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard and built-in microphone for an improved voice recognition search.

Sony is said to be entering the phablet race, as they are rumored to be unveiling Sony Yuga, which is now being referred to as the Xperia Z – a smartphone that features a 5-inch HD touch screen with 440 ppi, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm S4 Pro quad-core processor complemented by 2GB of RAM.  The device would also include 16GB of internal memory, microSDXC card to expand it, 4G LTE connectivity, WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, GPS receiver, and will run Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

We can also expect the Xperia Z to feature a 13MP rear camera with Exmor RS Camera sensor, HDR video recording, and will also have a front-facing camera. NTT Docomo in Japan will be the first to sell the Xperia Z followed by stores in the US, Hong Kong and global availability is slated for April 2013.

For cameras, the trend seems to be moving to connected devices, powered by Android– much like our smartphones.  Polaroid is said to be unveiling an Android-powered, mirrorless camera that features interchangeable lenses.  The camera is currently being referred to as the IM1836 is rumored to have an 18.1 MP resolution, 3.5 inch touchscreen display, pop-up flash, built in Wi-Fi, both headphone and HDMI outputs, capable of HD video recording, and will run ANdroid 4.0 or ICS.  But Polaroid CEO Scott Hardy does not confirm the rumored specs of the camera and stated that they will reveal them at the CES 2013.
