HP Restructures German Services

HP has announced a restructuring of its Enterprise Services business in Germany as part of its global multiyear restructuring plan announced on May 23. Under the proposal presented to the German Supervisory Board, the changes will impact 1,100 positions and include closing its site in Russelsheim, Germany. More

 

Dell Expands Foglight vOPS to cover full VM Life Cycle

Dell Software has announced Foglight vOPS Standard 6.5, from Dell acquisition VKernel, extending it to cover the full VM life cycle from hardware modeling to automated VM decommissioning. The changes will help companies reduce capital expenditures in virtualized data centers. More

 

Microsoft Introduces the 4Afrika Initiative to Improve the Continent’s Global Competitiveness

Microsoft Corp. has announced the Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative, through which Microsoft will actively engage in Africa’s economic development to improve its global competitiveness. The company plans to place tens of millions of smart devices in the hands of African youth, bring 1 million African SMBs online, upskill 100,000 members of Africa’s workforce, and help an additional 100,000 recent graduates develop employability skills, 75 percent of whom Microsoft will help place in jobs, all by 2016. More

 

Microsoft, Kenyan Government, Indigo Telecom to Harness Solar, TV White Space to Provide Low Cost Broadband

Microsoft Corp. is working with the government of Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communications and Indigo Telecom Ltd. on a pilot project to deliver low-cost wireless broadband access to unserved areas near Nanyuki and Kalema, Kenya. The pilot uses solar-powered base stations and white space in TV signals to deliver broadband that creates new opportunities for commerce, education, healthcare, and delivery of government services. It is part of Microsoft’s broader 4Afrika Initiative to improve the continent’s global competitiveness. More

AWS Introduces Amazon Elastic Transcoder

Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) has announced Amazon Elastic Transcoder, a highly scalable service for transcoding video files between different digital media formats. For example, customers can use it to covert high resolution master video files into smaller versions optimized for playback on websites, mobile devices, connected TVs and other video platforms. AWS Introduces High Memory Cluster Instances

Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) has announced High Memory Cluster instances, a new Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance family designed for memory-intensive applications. These include in-memory analytics, databases, caching, an scientific computing. They are also good for taking advantage of distributed memory architectures. More

 

ViaWest Achieves Cisco Cloud and Managed Services Advanced Certification

ViaWest, a large North American privately held data center, cloud computing, and managed service provider, has announced that it is received the Cisco Cloud and Managed Services Advance Certification. ViaWest Appoints Bob Newman as COO

ViaWest has appointed Bob Newman as the company COO, responsible for ViaWest’s operations, including data center management, service delivery, service support, information technology, engineering, security, compliance, and customer relations. Newman joined ViaWest in 2010 as Senior VP of Service Delivery. His previous IT management experience includes leadership roles in the LS Church in Salt Lake City and with Infocrossing, a selective IT outsourcer. More

 

CSC Reports Continuing Improvement in 3Q13 Operations

CSC has reported 3Q13 dilute earnings per share of $3.27, incluing $0.77 from continuing operations an $2.50 from two businesses that were divested during the quarter. This compares with a diluted loss per share of $8.95 in 3Q12, which included a change relating to the UK National Health Service contract of $9.93 per share. Total revenues were $3.78 billion compared with $3.69 billion the previous year, an increase of 2.8 percent in constant currency. More
