HP 1Q13 Earnings Better than Expected, Still Down from 1Q12

HP has reported network revenue of $28.4 billion, down 6% from prior year, but better than predicted in previous guidance. First quarter non-GAAP diluted earnings per share are $0.82, down 11% but above the guidance of $0.68 to $0.71. First quarter GAAP diluted earnings per share are $0.63, down 14%, but again significantly above the guidance of $0.34 to $0.37. Cash flow from operations was $2.6 billion, up 115% from the prior year. HP reported revenue down in all its major divisions, led by Personal Systems, down 8%, and Enterprise Services, down 7%. More


IBM, NXP Reports First Results of Smarter Traffic Pilot

IBM and NXP Semiconductors N.V. have announced successful first results of a smarter traffic pilot in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. The trial demonstrates how the connected car automatically shares braking, acceleration, and location data that can be analyzed by the central traffic authority to identify and resolve road network issues. The 12-month trial was designed to provide the regional government with insights to maintain roads, reduce traffic congestion, and increase road safety. More


Deutsche Telekom, IBM Collaborate to Build Smarter Cities

Deutsche Telekom and IBM have announced a collaboration to provide an integrated solutions portfolio that enables cities to make smarter use of their services through intelligent data capture and analysis. The initiative will build on IBM’s expertise from thousands of smarter city engagements combined with Deutsche Telekom’s global Machine-to-Machine (M2M) capabilities including solutions integration and advanced network connectivity. More


Nikon, Microsoft Sign Android Patent Agreement

Microsoft Corp. and Nikon Corp. have signed a patent licensing agreement providing broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for certain Nikon cameras running the Google Android operating system. Contents of the agreement will not be disclosed, but Microsoft will receive royalties from Nikon. More


Hortonworks Proposes New Apache Hadoop Incubation Projects

Hortonworks has submitted two new incubation projects to the Apache Software Foundation and announced the Stinger Initiative, three efforts to enhance the security and performance of Hadoop applications. Hortonworks introduced these projects to address key enterprise requirements in an open and collaborative way within the Haoop community. These projects follow the success of similar innovative projects initiated within the community by Hortonworks engineers, including Apache Ambari, Apache HCatalog, and Apache Hadoop YARN. More

KPMG to Acquire Oracle ERP Practice from The Hackett Group

KPMG LLP has signed an agreement to acquire the Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) practice of The Hackett Group, a global strategic advisory and business transformation consulting firm. The purchase broadens KPMG’s ERP capabilities and enhances its Oracle consulting services. Financial terms of the agreement will not be disclosed, but the transaction is expected to close soon. More
