LIVE: Presidential Incentives Key in Cybersecurity Reform

Welcome to NewsDesk on SiliconANGLE TV for Wednesday August 7, 2013. Yesterday The White House released a preliminary set of incentives it may offer companies who are willing to join a cybersecurity program chaired by the Department of Homeland Security, and the notion has many security experts concerned. Joining us now to share details about the DHS’s cybersecurity program is SiliconANGLE Contributing Editor John Casaretto.

After failing to reach an agreement on cybersecurity legislation twice last year, the president signed an executive order which this new program falls under. In it, businesses could receive insurance from agencies if they adopt certain standards within their computer networks, priority consideration for grants and technical assistance from the government, and public recognition for compliance with the voluntary program’s cybersecurity standards.

“Over the next few months, agencies will examine these options in detail to determine which ones to adopt and how, based substantially on input from critical infrastructure stakeholders,” the White House said in a blog post. “We believe that sharing the findings and our plans for continued work will promote transparency and sustain a public conversation about the recommendations.”

On today’s episode of NewsDesk with Kristin Feledy, we’ll be speaking with our very own security expert John Casaretto on the implications and agendas of the impending programs.

We will be sure to ask him what role the DHC, as well as the National Institute of Standards and Technology will play in the program, and what kind of incentives will be offered to companies to step on their customers’ privacy rights in the name of security.

We will also ask him the important questions, like how the committee will determine which options will be adopted, and why this incentive program has a chance to pass where so many before have failed. There’s that, and a whole lot of news coming from Google on this morning’s NewsDesk with Kristin Feledy.
