Weekly Big Data Review: Management and Healthcare Analytics

The Big Data space saw a lot of activity this past week. Zenoss announced that it has rearchitectured its data-driven operations management platform, Cleversafe and Panzura teamed up to make information more consumable for global enterpises, and PernixData introduced an SMB-optimized version of its flagship offering. In other news, Hewlett Packard revealed how the Vertica Analytics Platform helps healthcare providers improve patient care and drive operational efficency.

On Monday, Zenoss unveiled the latest version of its Service Dynamics management solution. The release introduces several major enhancements, including a reorganized schema and an upgraded business intelligence engine that supports in-memory columnar queries. It also offers self service data mining and filtering, new graph libraries and an API that lets users integrate the platform with frontend visualization tools.

Zenoss announced the Service Dynamics update around the same time data storage vendors Cleversafe and Panzura entered a partnership to deliver a next generation NAS solution. The offering utilizes the latter’s cloud-based file system to make files accessible across multiple geographical locations.

A day after Cleversage and Panzura made their alliance public, up-and-coming virtualization firm PernixData announced a new edition of its flagship solution. PernixData FVP is a flash-aware hypervisor that makes server-side flash accessible across all hosts in a cluster, a feature that can come in particularly handy for data analytics, machine learning and other resource-alternative workloads.

The SMB Edition of FVP is priced at a flat $9,999. It supports up to 100 virtual machines across a maximum of four hosts with two processors and one flash drive each.

FVP is gaining traction thanks to the rapid adoption of Big Data across all verticals, including more conservative industries such as finance and healthcare. Cerner, a provider of health system solutions, is driving value by tailoring its solutions to user activity patterns. Hewlett Packard detailed how the company is using the Vertica Analytics Platform to optimize usability in a recently released case study.
