HP, Metacloud milestones leading up to #OpenStackSummit

cloud_computing_2014_0010With OpenStack Summit 2014 set to kick off tomorrow in Atlanta, now is a good time to revisit two major industry milestones leading up to the event. The annual OpenStack Summit is poised to attract the largest attendance to date this year—a sign that adoption of the open-source cloud platform is continuing apace. The industry developments of the past week or so from Hewlett-Packard and Metacloud may help paint a picture of what we can expect from the conference, at least in terms of scope.

Hewlett-Packard

.

Hewlett-Packard set the pace last week with the announcement that it plans to invest $1 billion to build out its portfolio of private and public cloud solutions over the next two years. As part of the initiative, the company is rolling out its very own OpenStack distribution; it will be available in a commercial version for full-blown production deployments as well as in a free community edition. The initiative is scheduled to launch in the coming months. HP is taking the professional services route to differentiating its platform from existing distributions on the market, offering help with implementation and planning.

.

Metacloud

.

Over in the startup space, there is OpenStack hosting provider Metacloud, one of the scores of up-and-comers against which HP is now competing. Metacloud last week revealed that it has bagged $15 million in Series B financing from Pelion Venture Partners, Silicon Valley Bank and UMC Capital. Existing backers AME Cloud Ventures, Canaan Partners and Storm Ventures also participated in the round, which more than doubles the firm’s total capital raised to $25 million.

Metacloud in February branched out to the private cloud in a move that put it on roughly the same strategic trajectory as that of open-source solution provider Red Hat, which is also leveraging the cloud platform as the foundation for its hybrid cloud strategy. Most recently, the open source stalwart teamed up with Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) platform provider Tesora to integrate the Trove database-as-a-service component of OpenStack with its distro in a bid to give customers more choice on the data management front.
