Hadoop security back in the spotlight

cloud lock securityData security is becoming an even bigger priority than it has been so far as organizations extract more value from their fast-growing data troves, but Hadoop, the single most popular platform for storing and processing vast swaths of unstructured information, falls short of enterprise requirements on that  front. The functionality gap is quickly narrowing, however, thanks to the efforts of vendors like Sqrrl, the startup behind Accumulo.

Originally developed for the National Security Agency (NSA), the open source database runs directly atop Hadoop and provides the ability to assign different access permissions for individual cells in a table, a level of granularity that is unrivaled by any other solution.  The commercial version of the software includes value-added features such as structured query and advanced search.  The latest release of Sqrrl Enterprise, which made its debut last Wednesday, adds a new fielded term index type, faster data import and backup and recovery as well support for clients based on Node.js, a JavaScript framework that has become widely popular among web developers thanks to its simplicity and high performance.

The launch of Sqrrl Enterprise 1.4 came hot on the heels of Dataguise announcing the availability of its flagship DgSecure suite for the trial versions of Hortonworks’ and MapR’s Hadoop distributions. The company hopes that the move will help drive adoption of its software, which packs an extensive feature set that includes pre-built policy templates for specific industries, automatic tracking of sensitive information  and a set of monitoring dashboards.

Like their startup counterparts, incumbent vendors are also recognizing the need for more control in analytical environments.   Dell this week joined forces with  Informatica to help companies in the healthcare and financial services sectors make better use of their information while staying in line with the myriad different regulations governing data governance in those industries.
