Old iPhones worth $280 on average: Here’s where to sell

cash moneyWith Apple Inc.’s iPhone 6 is expected to drop on September 9, it’s the prime opportunity to get rid of your old iPhone. Last year, we featured the best places to trade your old iPhone for cash or a newer version of the popular smartphone, and we’ve updated the list for 2014.

Before we get started, here’s a brief recap on the expected features for the highly anticipated iPhone 6.

Why ditch the old iPhone?

Rumors suggest that Apple will debut two iPhones to upgrade the 5 line, launched at separate times.  The first version with a 4.7” display will likely be unveiled on September 9, while the larger 5.5” display model will be released at a later date. The two devices are expected to have similar designs: tapered edges and rounded corners, a relocated the power button moved to the side for easier one-hand navigation, redesigned speaker grills and volume buttons. Both devices are expected to have the Touch ID security feature, based on leaked photos.

There are also rumors of Apple using a reversible USB for its charging cable that would reduce charging time by up to 30 percent, but recent news states that this new charging cable may not appear in this year’s new iPhones, as Apple has only ordered samples of the reversible USBs instead of large quantities.

There are many other physical changes expected for the iPhone 6, such as a rounded True Tone rear flash, protruding camera lens, an embedded Apple logo, a 1,810 mAh battery for the 4.7” version and 2,915 mAh battery for the 5.5” version. The device’s chips, boards, and flex cables are also thought to be redesigned on the new iPhones.

Where to trade-in your old iPhone

Gazelle

Let’s say you have an iPhone 5s 64GB that is in good condition, which means it still looks good but has signs of normal use such as a few scratches. If its unlocked or under contract from Verizon, Gazelle Inc. is offering $325 for the smartphone.

But if your iPhone 5s is in contract with AT&T, Gazelle’s payout drops to $285, and even lower to $225 for T-Mobile subscribers. Sprint customers receive a measly $190.

If you have a broken iPhone 5s 64GB, the best Gazelle can offer you is $100, depending on your carrier and how badly  your device has been damaged.

Wal-mart

At Wal-mart Stores, Inc., a working iPhone 5S 64GB unlocked or on AT&T is worth $300, $275 if on Sprint, $250 if on T-Mobile and $325 if on Verizon. Compared to Gazelle’s offering, if you’re on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Walmart has a better offer.

Determining the value of your device for reselling to Wal-mart is easy enough. Just answer a few questions, such as whether or not the device is working and what carrier you’re using, to get an estimate of your iPhone’s value. It it’s not working, the best offer you can get at Wal-mart is about $87 if you’re on Verizon.

GameStop

You might think it strange to trade-in your iPhone at GameStop, Corp. but the video game retailer offers either cash or in-store trade credit which, if you’re a huge gamer, can be huge plus. Your iPhone 5S 64GB on Verizon  is valued at $265 in in-store trade credit or $210 in cash; $280 in-store trade credit if on T-Mobile or AT&T, or $222 in cash value.

Amazon

Amazon.com, Inc. is your online one-stop shop, also offering trade ins for your iDevices. Depending on the condition of your iPhone 5S 64GB regardless of what carrier you’re on, it’s value can reach as high as $400. If you have a pretty badly beaten phone, regardless of the carrier, you’ll probably receive less than a $100.

uSell

On uSell.com, Inc. a 64GB iPhone 5S in good condition on AT&T’s network is valued at $336.60. The trade-in value drops to $147 if you’re on Sprint, $292.50 if you’re on Verizon, $216 if you’re on Sprint, and $255 if the phone is unlocked.  If your device is in pretty bad shape, the best you could get is $119 if you’re on Verizon.

Now is the time to sell

eBay Inc. has released an infographic detailing how postings for used iPhones will continue to increase as Apple nears the launch of its newest handset. According to the infographic entitled “Historical iPhone Marketplace Trends,” with each new model, there has been an uptick in the number of sales and listings globally following the announcement of a new iPhone, and that the average selling price of older iPhone models is around $280.

This year, eBay is confident that all posted iPhones on its site will be sold, that if you’re a seller and your unit doesn’t get sold, the company will give you a $100 coupon.
