FLUX 3D printer hits $1.3M on Kickstarter, could be the only 3D printer you’ll ever need

flux 3d printerThe team behind the FLUX 3D printer, FLUX Technology LLC, has a new take on 3D printing with their all-in-one device. Their modular design, with interchangeable heads, combines printing, scanning and laser engraving in one device. They are funding their effort through Kickstarter and have raised more than $1.3 million dollars to date, with four days to go.

After launching the Kickstarter campaign in November, FLUX reached their initial funding goal of $100,000 in just under three hours and blew through the $500,000 mark after just two days.

The FLUX 3D printer features basic fused filament fabrication 3D printing and can precision print at high speeds. The built-in 3D scanner allows you to clone objects and eliminates the need to build complex 3D models. The laser engraving module is one of the first expandable options and features a 200mW laser head.

FLUX has a working prototype and you can see it in action in the video below:

Other modules under development are: a dual extruder; a ceramics extruder and a pastry extruder –the pastry extruder will allow use of chocolate, jam or a variety of other edibles.

The Flux 3D printer has an open module software development kit which the company says will allow other engineers to create additional modules in the future. This could lead to interesting applications and allows the user community to have some input on future development. FLUX says it’s already working with other startups to develop toolheads for special materials and applications.

The printer also has Wi-Fi to connect it to your smartphone or other Wi-Fi devices. Currently under development is FLUX Studio, the user interface. FLUX Studio intends to simplify the process of 3D modeling, hardware control, and system configuration.

After hitting their initial goal, FLUX set a number of stretch goals and has attained all but one so far. Thanks to this support, the final device will now also include an 8GB SD card (the prototype has a 2GB SD card), a gyroscope, a Writer module that holds a pen and can write and draw pictures and the aforementioned Wi-Fi capability. The last stretch goal, set at the $1.5 million mark, is to add real-time monitoring to the camera in the scanning module to allow users to track the printing process –presumably remotely via a Wi-Fi connected device.

The team at FLUX aims to ship production units to early Kicstarter backers by July 2015.
