In-home care startup Honor lands $20M to modernize senior care

Honorhonor mobile app, a startup on a mission to change the face of in-home senior care, has landed $20 million in funding to help realize its vision. Led by Andreessen-Horowitz with an investment of $15 million, the funding round also raised $5 million dollars from other big names like Yelp founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppleman, PayPal co-founder and Slide founder Max Levchin, actress Jessica Alba and producer Cash Warren, among others.

Marc Andreessen of Andreessen-Horowitz has joined Honor board of directors.

Honor aims to connect in-home caregivers, seniors and their families through its platform. Through a combination of an in-home screen for the senior receiving care, dubbed the Honor Frame, and a mobile app for families, both parties stay updated and informed.

The Honor Frame lets seniors know who their caregiver for the day is and when they are due to arrive while the mobile app shows families who took care of their elderly parents, what activities the caregiver performed and for how long they stayed.

Focused on helping seniors live their lives, Honor will match them with suitable pre-screened caregivers to assist with daily tasks such as getting around the house, performing chores or driving.

The company also wants to make a difference to caregivers by paying them a minimum of $15 per hour compared to the industry standard of just $9.50 per hour.

Seth Sternberg, founder of Honor, wrote in a blog post announcing the service that he came up with the idea while visiting his mom in Connecticut. On the trip from the airport, he noted that she was no longer the confident driver of years gone by, and immediately started thinking about the future and other day-to-day activities she and other seniors might struggle with.

The service is launching later in April in Contra Costa County, California and will soon roll out across the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
