Apple WWDC 2015: Where to watch and what to expect

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) takes place in San Francisco, California, from June 8 to 12. As is tradition, the conference will kick off with a keynote on June 8 during which Apple CEO Tim Cook and other executives will make several major announcements related to product updates, new products and future developments.

WWDC 2015: Where can you watch live

As reported by 9to5Mac, Apple has updated its Apple Events application on the Apple TV to live stream the WWDC 2015 keynote when it kicks off at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern Time on Monday, June 8.

The company has now also updated its events website, and you can live stream the keynote via the site on Mac and iOS devices running the Safari Web browser.

Live streaming video requires Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later; Safari on iOS 6.0 or later. Streaming via Apple TV requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 6.2 or later.

WWDC 2015: Product announcements

iOS 9

Due for release in September, iOS 9 is rumored to feature a Google Now-like lifestyle assistant codenamed “Proactive.” Proactive is said to be a replacement for Spotlight Search and will surface content from apps, Contacts, Calendar and Maps in much the same way as Cards on Google Now.

Starting with six cities across the United States, Canada and Europe, iOS 9 will also see the return of public transit information to Maps. Other Maps changes expected in iOS 9 include a new “Browse Around Me” function for Points of Interest and an augmented reality view.

Last week 9to5Mac reported on a leak that indicated that iOS 9 is being built with Force Touch support, suggesting that the upcoming iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus may feature Force Touch technology.

Other iOS 9 tweaks we expect to hear about include security and performance improvements, a redesigned keyboard, split screen support and a new font.

New Streaming Music Service

Apple is set to unveil a yet-to-be-named revamped Beats Music-based streaming music service at WWDC 2015. A report Monday indicated that the service will cost $10 per month and feature celebrity artists and DJs. The new service will likely form part of iTunes and the iOS Music app.

New Apple TV Set-Top Box

Rumors suggest Apple will unveil new hardware for Apple TV, including a new Touch Pad remote and an A8 chip for increased performance along with an internal storage upgrade. Other Apple TV updates are likely to include support for Siri and an App Store.

Apple Pay Rewards

Recent rumors have suggested an upcoming rewards program for Apple Pay that will offer “perks” for Apple Pay transactions. It may also allow users to add third-party loyalty and rewards cards. At the same time, iOS 9 is set to add support for Apple Pay in Canada, suggesting the service may be rolled out there later this year.

HomeKit and ‘Home’ app

With the fist HomeKit-enabled accessories set to go on sale in June, we expect to hear at least an update on the program from Apple. Last month rumors surfaced that Apple will include a ‘Home’ app in iOS 9 to control HomeKit devices connected via an Apple TV hub.
