iPhone 6s, 6s Plus Tumblr users can now share Live Photos on their blogs

Apple’s new Live Photos feature might be going mainstream – kind of. So far Live Photos has been restricted to owners of Apple’s new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices and could only be shared easily via apps like iMessage with other iPhone 6s or 6s Plus owners.

That changed on Thursday when popular Yahoo Inc. owned microblogging platform and social networking website Tumblr Inc. updated the Tumblr iOS app to support Live Photos, making it one the first major third-party apps to do so (via TechCrunch).

Once iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users have installed the latest Tumblr for iOS update, they will be able to add Live Photos to their Tumblr posts in the same way they would add a normal image. Now, when another iPhone user views that post, they’ll spot a Live Photo icon on the corner of the photo – described as “a little concentric-circle supernova icon up in the corner” by Tumblr – letting them know they are seeing a Live Photo instead of just a normal picture.

To activate a Live Photo in Tumblr, iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users can simply use 3D Touch to play the mini video and sound, just like they would do in the native iOS Photos app.

Alongside support for Live Photos, Tumblr for iOS now also supports 3D Touch – which makes sense as the two go hand in hand. Using 3D Touch, iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users can press on the Tumblr app icon to see a shortcut to search Tumblr and press on a bloggers name or avatar to Peek (get a preview) of that Tumblr or Pop into the Tumblr to see its content. An upward swipe while in Peek mode lets users send a message to the blog.

Support for Live Photos and 3D Touch is limited to the iOS app while Tumblr also rolled out its new messaging app to all users, including iOS, Android and the web.

If other apps – especially social networks with a focus on rich media – follow Tumblr’s example, Live Photos may just become the new standard for how photos are shared on the web going forward.
