Daybreak Games will soon make you buy H1Z1 twice

In a move that seems appropriate for the studio that ruined Star Wars Galaxies (yes, I’m still bitter), Daybreak Game Company, formerly Sony Online Entertainment, has announced that its zombie survival game H1Z1 will be split into two separate games, neither of which will be free-to-play.

Daybreak announced the split on the official H1Z1 blog:

“H1Z1 has been on an incredible journey since its inception, and the time spent in Early Access has been invaluable to the development direction of the game. Our community has been a huge part of the game’s roadmap and success. Last year, we started to notice new player trends emerging – both the initial Survival game and Battle Royale game mode now have strong populations who almost exclusively play one or the other.

“The more we developed this game with you, our community, the more we realized that in order to fully support both aspects of H1Z1, and their respective players, we needed to make them their own stand-alone games supported by their own dedicated development teams. Many players in the community have been discussing splitting the game and we’ve heard you loud and clear. We want to make sure we give both titles the support they need and deserve to truly flourish.”

H1Z1 splitting in two

Daybreak said that the split will occur on February 17. The battle royal game mode is being rebranded as H1Z1: King of the Kill (ugh), and the survival game mode will become H1Z1: Just Survive (double ugh).

Users who purchase the original H1Z1 on or before February 16 will be able to access both games after the split, but after that day, you will have to buy each game mode separately. The two new games will each cost $19.99, the same price as the current game, which means that new users will have to pay double the current price if they want both game modes.

Both games will still be on Steam Early Access after the split, but Daybreak said that H1Z1: King of The Kill is set for a full release this summer. The studio could not say how long H1Z1: Just Survive will remain in Early Access.
