Trump supporter’s “Mass Effect” video taken down by EA

Electronic Arts Inc has ordered that a fanmade Donald Trump ad be taken down from YouTube after learning that the video used a voice over ripped directly from BioWare’s Mass Effect 2.

“The video was an unauthorized use of our IP,” an EA spokesperson told GameInformer in a statement. “We do not support our assets being used in political campaigns.”

The video in question used a monologue from the Illusive Man, a mysterious and antagonistic character portrayed by Martin Sheen in the game.

“We’re at war,” the Illusive Man says in the monologue used for the Trump video. “No one wants to admit it, but humanity is under attack. One very specific man might be all that stands between humanity and the greatest threat of our brief existence.”

“We need a leader and surround them with the brightest, the toughest, the deadliest allies we can find.”

The fanmade ad rapidly gained attention after Trump retweeted it to his followers on Twitter, perhaps not realizing that the monologue used in the ad came from a video game. It has since been removed from YouTube, but currently, it can still be viewed at vid.me.

Trump’s tweet of the video has also been deleted.

Sincere or Satire?

It is difficult to determine whether the video was intended to be a sincere ad supporting Trump’s campaign for president or if it was actually satire poking fun at the candidate.

On the internet, this is commonly referred to as Poe’s Law, which essentially states that it is difficult to distinguish between extreme views and parodies of those views because they are both equally insane.

One hint that the video may not actually be genuine is the fact that the Illusive Man is not a particularly positive character in the games and at one point became an enemy of the hero.

The themes in the Mass Effect series also focus heavily on overcoming cultural differences to unite under a common cause, which does not exactly sound like a sentiment a Trump backer would support.
