“Brutally hard” Dark Souls board game coming to Kickstarter

Tabletop game company Steamforged Games Ltd recently announced that it will be launching a Kickstarter campaign for a board game adaptation of Dark Souls, the notoriously difficult video game series developer by Japanese game studio From Software, and now Steamforged has revealed more details about the game, including when the crowdfunding campaign will go live.

“Designed from the ground up, the Dark Souls board game is a brutally hard exploration miniatures game for 1-4 players,” Steamforged said in a blog post. “Prepare to die. Because this will be the hardest board game you have ever played.”

Steamforged said that the game will feature “an exciting ‘fast setup, long reveal’ mechanic” that will allow players to jump into the game quickly while adding complexity over time. This is good news for Dark Souls fans who are not avid tabletop fanatics, as many of the more in-depth board games require a lengthy setup phase that can delay the game by as much as 10 to 15 minutes.

While game mechanics are certainly vital for capturing the feel of the Dark Souls games, Steamforged said that it also considers the art style of the series to be equally as important, which is why it is creating intricately detailed miniatures for the tabletop game.

“Using our advanced miniatures pipeline and working with one of the finest board game manufacturers in the world, the quality and detail in the miniatures will be world class,” Steamforged said. “As Dark Souls fans, and with the entirety of the Dark Souls universe available to us, one of the hardest decision has been to narrow down which enemies and bosses to include in the core game. We wanted to be sure to use both old favorites as well as new enemies from Dark Souls 3.”

“From the start of this project, Steamforged Games has worked closely with the team at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment,” Steamforged added. “Dark Souls fans can be sure that this board game will give an experience that captures the very essence of the original video games.”

The Kickstarter campaign for the Dark Souls board game will launch on April 19, and knowing the rabid fan base behind the game series, Steamforged will likely have no trouble meeting its goal.
