Mobile-enabled enterprise network security startup Cyber adAPT closes $15m Series A round

Mobile-enabled enterprise network security startup Cyber adAPT, Inc. has closed a $15 million Series A round with an additional $5 million from Black River Investments LLC.

Previous investors in the round include Alvin Fund, Fundamental Capital, Granite Point Capital, and Griffin Fund II.

Founded in 2014, Cyber adAPT offers a security platform that monitors 100 percent of traffic inside mobile-enabled enterprise networks, instantly illuminating otherwise hidden, malicious threats that make it through perimeter defenses.

The technology is said to protect digital assets and real-world reputations by seamlessly extending perimeter defenses out to mobile and BYO (bring your own) devices, without compromising overall network performance.

Cyber adAPT’s platform is non-signature based, agent-less and works by analyzing protocol and application activity in real-time, detecting toxic patterns of network behavior and identifying more genuine attacks before they cause harm.

As SiliconANGLE’s Paul Gillin explained back May 2015:

The Real-Time Network Threat Detection Platform appliance from Cyber adAPT, Inc. passively observes network traffic at line rate speeds up to 40Gb/sec and look for malicious activity – both malware and human-driven – using deep packet inspection. Anomalous patterns are correlated with data from threat feeds to identify possible intrusions early and reduce false positives. A partnership with Tripwire, Inc. accelerates behavior detection, and Cyber adAPT is also working with iScan Online, Inc. to estimate the cost of a breach in order to better target response strategies.

“This funding will accelerate our strategy to reinvent the attack detection space by rapidly advancing our product capabilities,” Cyber adAPT President and Chief Executive Officer Kirsten Bay said in a statement sent to SiliconANGLE. “The timing is key, enabling us to build on our market traction by providing the resources to speed up revenue growth.”

BYO defense

One of the hardest aspects of securing a network from outside intrusion in 2016, as it has been for several years, is the proliferation of BYO devices used by employees to connect to enterprise work spaces.

Long gone are the days of standardized Blackberry device rollouts and similar where security within an enterprise dictated that employees could only use company-issued devices, or approved types of devices that met enterprise security needs; in an age where employees have their own devices, many workplaces have had no choice but to allow them to be used to connect to their networks, irrespective of any security risks they may present.

By taking a broad approach to every mobile device, no matter what type, Cyber adAPT correlates multiple streams of contextual data, to quickly assess any vulnerability presented by these devices to the network, then goes to work to find and isolate threats or attacks.

The company utilizes forensic data and applied analytics that can anticipate an intruder’s next step that in many instances are said to be able detect and stop an attack before it harms indispensable IP.

Cyber adAPT said it would use the new funds to expand into core markets.
