Building bridges: Learning to live in the world of many clouds | #SAPPHIRENOW

Some enterprises are running so many different clouds, consultants are starting to specialize in decluttering their clients’ cloud inventories. But the fact is that most companies using multiple clouds need them all to perform crucial tasks. For them, better means of traveling among clouds are what’s needed.

Dave Mason, SVP of cDOT Acceleration at NetApp, Inc., said, “Everybody is struggling with how to lower their overall cost of operation.” He told John Furrier (@furrier) and Peter Burris (@plburris), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, that IT environments are becoming more complex and sprawled, with hybrid models being the norm.

“ONTAP [a NetApp data tool] was built for that,” he said. “It’s agnostic to clouds — it doesn’t matter if you’re in Azure today and Amazon tomorrow.”

The only constant is change

Mason said that pricing is one area that guarantees customers will continue cloud hopping for the forseeable future. “The ability to flex back and forth as changing in prices goes up — especially as you have demand pricing now — it’s so critical,” he stated.

Chuck Goehringer, Global Strategic Partner Organization at Cisco Systems, Inc., also joined in on the interview. “The pace of change and what we’re seeing right now doesn’t lend itself to a flattening” of clouds, he said. Instead, he added, cloud-bridging will be the trend in what he calls, “The world of many clouds.”
