What to expect from WWDC 2016

There are plenty rumors making the rounds of what we can expect to see at WWDC 2016 when it starts on June, 13. Here is a look at those rumors, but make sure you watch the live stream of the keynote for all the details.

App Store changes

Some major changes to the App Store have been revealed just days before the developers conference is due to kick off. App Store head Phil Schiller shared the news in an interview with The Verge just prior to Apple announcing the news. Changes include controversial ad placement in App Store search results, a featured app will no longer be promoted by the App Store once you have installed it, and iPhone 6s and 6s Plus users will be able to use 3D Touch to share App Store apps with others from the Home screen.

Developers will also be happy about a change in the revenue sharing model. The current model splits the subscription revenue 70-30 between developers and Apple. For subscription based apps the model will change to 85-15 (the customer subscription needs to be active for a minimum of a year).

iOS 10

Rumors surrounding iOS 10 include the ability for users to hide default apps, a standalone HealthKit app called Home, the ability for Siri to transcribe your voicemails and more.

Siri SDK

Another rumor surrounding Siri is that Apple will be opening up its Siri software development kit (SDK) to third-party developers. In an email statement sent to SiliconANGLE, Anant Jhingran (@jhingran), CTO of Apigee Corp. said, “For AI to truly affect a large number of consumers, it has to be unleashed and handed over to developers — then it will have the power to transform the way all of us use technology. Apple is taking the first step in democratizing AI by empowering developers to incorporate AI into their apps, changing the way those apps are used forever.”

Updated operating systems for Apple TV, Watch and Mac

WWDC 2016 is also likely to reveal the latest OS for Mac, including a name change from Mac OS X to MacOS and a redesigned iTunes for desktop. We are also likely to see the latest version of WatchOS and a possible sneak peek of the Apple Watch 2. In addition to tvOS, we could also see Siri remote features for the iOS Remote app and a slim chance of Apple announcing a streaming service.

Other possible announcements

Other rumored WWDC announcements include a revamp of Apple Music and new features for Apple Pay, including person-to-person payments and Apple Pay support for ATM withdrawals. We could also possibly see new MacBook Pros announced at the event.
