Uber redesigns its mobile rider app, adds shortcuts, people as a destination and more

Uber Technologies Inc. has completely redesigned its rider mobile apps for Android and iOS. In addition to making the app easier to use, the redesign also includes integrations with Yelp, Pandora, Snapchat and Foursquare, among others.

The updated Uber app is rolling out globally over the next few weeks on both Android and iOS.

Shortcuts to work, home, other

For regular Uber users, the new app will use machine learning to understand your routines and provide “shortcuts” for possible destinations such as work, home or gym based on the time of the day.

Uber will soon launch the functionality to connect your calendar to the Uber app, allowing upcoming meetings, dinner reservations, etc. to appear as shortcuts.

People as a destination

Uber will soon allow users to add a person as their destination. Once a user has synced their phone contacts with the Uber app, they can simply type a person’s name into the search bar, a note will be sent to the person requesting them to share their location.

Select an uberX, uberBLACK or uberPOOL

Once you have added your destination, you can select which ride you want to take. The Uber app will display upfront fares for all options and expected destination arrival times for uberPOOL and uberX.

Experiences during your ride

In addition to the existing functionality of fare splitting and sharing your trip status with friends, Uber will soon offer experiences based on your destination. Users will be able to use “Transit” to see upcoming departures for the train, bus, and subway. Users heading to a restaurant will be able to browse Yelp reviews or explore Foursquare for tips on a new neighborhood. Uber will also integrate with UberEATS so you can order food on your way home, as well as Snapchat and Pandora.

Meeting points for driver and rider

When it makes sense the Uber app will provide easy walking directions for riders so you can meet the Uber driver at a convenient location and speed up pickup.
