Moving the one-click experience of public cloud to the enterprise | #NEXTConf

The trend in the tech world these days is making things simple. Simplicity is definitely needed, since today’s systems are bigger and more complex than ever. That extends to everything from storage, to virtualization, to security. This technology has to come together, and the departments deploying it must be able to react quickly to changes in the business and tech worlds, according to Sunil Potti, chief product and development officer at Nutanix Inc.

To gain some insight on the trend toward simplicity, Stu Miniman (@stu), co-host of theCUBE*, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke to Potti at the Nutanix 2016 .NEXT Europe conference in Vienna, Austria.

Digital cloud transformation in two acts

The conversation started as Potti talked about storage. He mentioned that, at a pretty high level, the goal was to make storage invisible, make virtualization invisible, and then make one Cloud, with public and private clouds coming together.

He described the first act as bringing the one-click experience of public cloud to the enterprise. That means covering virtualization and storage, as well as networking and security. Potti stated that act two moves to the convergence of consumption models, from either private or public cloud, to basically making hybrid invisible.

“One of the things that keeps us honest as a company is to ensure we provide the one-click experience along with the web-scale fabric,” Potti said.

Changing roles for CIOs and Nutanix

Potti acknowledged the CIO role was evolving in many companies. He joked that every CIO is going to become a CAO, or “Chief Amazon Officer.” This referred to how he felt that CIOs should be able to provide the public cloud experience to their companies. A business user should be able to come to IT with a workload, and then see it provisioned with a one-click experience.

As for Nutanix itself, Potti confirmed it is growing. Even then, competing against the big players comes down to working hard and smart. Nutanix is picking and choosing features for the core product, while looking to leverage the platform. He related that a lot of its capability was in leveraging the platforming of enterprise cloud.
