Amazon Web Services announces new price cuts for its virtual servers

Amazon Web Services is leading the way with yet another round of price cuts for its instances, which are virtual servers in Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud computing service.

Amazon’s chief evangelist Jeff Barr said the cuts are about passing on cost savings to customers, and will cover multiple regions, prepaid reserved plans and full-machine dedicated host instances, as well as the company’s on-demand, pay-by-the-hour instances in its Elastic Compute Cloud.

In a blog post, Barr explained Amazon was able to pass on these cost savings after scaling up its data centers and through more efficient hardware management. Barr said prices will be slashed by up to 25 percent depending on the region and the platform used, such as Windows or Linux, and will apply across all regions. However, those based in the Asia Pacific region, which includes Mumbai, Singapore and Sydney, will see the biggest cost reductions.

Amazon said prices for its compute-focused C4 instances in the US East and European regions will fall by around five percent, while prices in Asia Pacific will decrease by up to 20 percent. As for the general-purpose M4 instances, US East and Europe will see prices will fall by around 10 percent, compared with a 25 percent drop in Asia Pacific. And the price of Amazon’s T2 instances, which are designed to provide moderate baseline performance with the capability to burst to significantly higher performance when needed, will drop by 10 percent in US East, and by 25 percent in Asia Pacific.

Barr said this is the 53rd round of price cuts will take effect from Dec. 1.
