Forrester names IBM as a leader in IoT platforms

IBM has put a huge emphasis on its Watson Internet of Things engine as it bids to become a bigger player in the public cloud market. Watson has been an ongoing project ever since 2006, and IBM has been working tirelessly to enhance its natural language processing and machine learning capabilities in recent years.

Watson first rose to attention after winning at the TV game show Jeopardy! in 2011, and ever since then its been at the forefront of IBM’s marketing efforts.

Last week, IBM celebrated its position in the upper-right corner of Forrester Research Inc.’s latest Forrester Wave: IoT Software Platforms, Q4 2016. It’s a position that denotes not just a strong product offering but also a strong market presence, and puts the company ahead of rivals like Microsoft Azure’s IoT Suite, GE’s Predix platform, PTC’s ThingWorx and Amazon Web Services’ IoT suite.

Coinciding with that report, IBM also launched its new Watson IoT Consulting Solutions service, which offers access to over 1,500 consultants and its Watson IoT platform. IBM’s new IoT consulting group is based in Munich, Germany, and has offices in eight other locations around the world. IBM also said it’s working with over 50,000 developers to help get them up to speed on the Watson IoT platform.

IBM said last year it was investing $3 billion to create an IoT unit, devoting more than 1,000 researchers, developers and designers to the effort, Forrester noted in its report. Since then, IBM has added cognitive capabilities to Watson, launched its Blockchain technology and introduced other features that make it “well positioned for market leadership,” Forrester said. However, the research firm noted that Watson isn’t so well integrated with analytics engines, and said it’s products are still quite confusing to learn.

Forrester said in its report that 60 percent of decision makers at global enterprises are either using, or plan to use IoT-enabled applications within the next two years.
