What to expect from AWS re:Invent – and how to watch it live | #reInvent

AWS re:Invent 2016, the fifth annual Amazon Web Services’ conference, is underway in Las Vegas. The conference will explore the Internet of Things, serverless computing, databases, containers and more.

SiliconANGLE will once again be at AWS re:Invent with exclusive interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. (* Disclosure below.)

Despite Amazon.com Inc. missing analysts expectations for the third quarter ending Sept. 30, AWS profits rose 55 percent to $3.2 billion, compared to $2.1 billion a year ago. “Right now, AWS is dominating the game in cloud and taking customers away from existing leaders by constantly lowering prices and at the same time increasing the numbers of cloud services available for customers — all while producing outstanding financial performance,” said Dave Vellante, chief research officer at Wikibon.

With a dominating lead in the cloud computing market, the decade-old AWS is now focusing its efforts on the large enterprise clients. This is a move that will see AWS face strong competition from traditional enterprise hardware and software companies like IBM, Google, Oracle, Microsoft and Intel.

However, the competitors aren’t the main focus for AWS; rather the company is constantly trying to anticipate what its customers want. In an interview with John Furrier, executive editor and co-chief executive officer of SiliconANGLE Media Inc. Andy Jassy, chief executive officer of AWS, explained, “One thing that’s different about AWS versus other organizations is that we spend a lot of time with customers. Our product teams spend a lot of time with customers — a lot of time with the customers who use their service, a lot of time with customers who say they have a need for that service, who aren’t using it. And so they’re constantly collecting signals and feedback from customers on what matters most and testing their theses against what customers are actually telling them matters.”

Last month, AWS announced a deal with VMware Inc. Starting next year, VMware customers will be able to use a new service called VMware Cloud on AWS, allowing customers to take advantage of more flexible and lower-cost storage and computing services. Details about the VMware integration remain unclear, including overall pricing strategies, licensing of databases and performance management on the AWS cloud, additional details are likely to be shared at re:Invent conference.

At its re:Invent conference, taking place until Dec. 2, AWS is due to announce PostgreSQL-compatible managed cloud service, according to a report from Fortune. The service will be similar to the company’s MySQL-compatible relational database — Aurora, which AWS launched last year.

AWS executives at re:Invent are also likely to announce the availability of its machine learning technology, which powers Amazon personal assistant Alexa, to cloud and developer customers, according to Fortune’s report.

Another large opportunity for AWS is the IoT. “IoT is a generational opportunity that’s just exploding,” said Jassy. ‘IoT is one of the fastest-growing and adopted types of new paradigm shifts that you’ve seen in a long time. And a lot of it is because the device manufacturers are highly incented to actually build in the cloud because it leads to additional capabilities. If you look at what people already are doing on top of AWS in the IoT space, most of the big implementations are on top of AWS are coming in the form of IoT.”
