Fuse raises $12M to let mobile developers work in real-time

Every mobile developer aims to provide fast response times for users, but they often don’t enjoy the same luxury in their own work, especially when it comes to interface design. Norway’s FuseTools SA believes the industry is due for a change.

The startup’s push today won the support of Nordic investment firms Northzone and Alliance Ventures to the tune of $12 million in funding. Fuse, as it’s commonly called, will use the capital to widen the adoption of its mobile development platform, which promises to help application teams speed up their work by eliminating many of the menial tasks normally involved in mobile projects. It places a particular emphasis on shortening the delay between design changes.

In a traditional development environment, tweaking the behavior or look of an interface component often requires recompiling the entire application, which can take a considerable amount of time. By contrast, Fuse allows designers to quickly implement modifications using a prototyping framework that works similarly to Chrome’s web development console. Users can easily perform changes using the platform’s custom scripting language and see how they affect their app as soon as they hit the “save” button.

Programmers, meanwhile, can employ Fuse to write the application logic that is needed to turn their design-minded colleagues’ layouts into functioning applications. Its built-in compiler automatically converts the high-level code in projects to low-level C++ files to maximize performance.

According to Fuse, the fact that everything is handled within the same platform allows application teams to collaborate much more easily than if they were using disparate tools. Programmers may edit interface code to add advanced capabilities, while designers can easily view changes to the underlying logic that could affect their aesthetic choices.

These small but meaningful conveniences have the potential to add up significantly over time. Fuse claims its platform can reduce the duration of application projects by up to half, thus speeding up release cycles while reducing development expenses. The startup’s value proposition has already attracted a “thriving worldwide developer community of fans and followers” along with several early enterprise adopters that are currently piloting its software.
