Watch live: taking cloud to the edge with fog computing

The “Taking the Cloud to the Edge With Fog Computing” event, brought to you by theCUBE and Western Digital Corp., takes place this evening in San Jose, California.

The number of connected “things” in the Internet of Things is expected to reach 20.4 billion by 2020, according to Gartner Inc., each with its own stream of data. The traditional cloud infrastructures can’t manage and process this data efficiently.

David Floyer, lead analyst and chief technology officer at Wikibon Research (owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE), said it’s too expensive and slow to run it all to the cloud and process it there. He said more of this data can be processed at the edge. For a self-driving car, data should not be run to the cloud and back to the car — real-time analysis at the edge is needed.

The solution is an architecture called fog computing that allows analysis of the most time-critical data to happen real-time where it’s needed most — at the edge-level. The fog computing market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 61 percent between 2017 and 2021.

SiliconANGLE will bring you exclusive coverage from the event from its roving news desk, theCUBE, and will explore how fog computing is enabling enterprise IoT markets. (* Disclosure below.)

What to expect

The opening keynote address at the “Taking the Cloud to the Edge With Fog Computing” event will be presented by Flavio Bonomi, former fellow for fog computing at Cisco Systems Inc. and founder and chief executive officer of Nebbiolo Technologies Inc. Nebbiolo launched its first fog computing offering last month that will enable the convergence between Information Technologies and Operational Technologies.

The first panel discussion, entitled “Digital Enactment: Data into Models, Models into Action,” will focus on data’s role in the business and the importance of fog computing at the edge. Panelists include Steve Madden, senior director of global enterprise at Equinix Inc.; Ted Connell, director of global industrial sector business development and solution architect at Intel Corp.; Phu Hoang, co-founder and chief strategy officer at DataTorrent Inc.; and Flavio Bonomi. The panel will be moderated by Peter Burris, chief research officer and analyst at Wikibon Research.

The second panel discussion entitled “IIoT and the Edge: Challenges of Data Extraction and Translation in the Industrial World” will explore practices and emerging technologies for data extraction and translation in the fog. Panelists include Janet George, fellow and chief data scientist at Western Digital; Sastry Malladi, chief technology officer at FogHorn Systems Inc.; Rohan Gosain, product marketing at Maana Inc.; and Val Bercovici, chief technology officer of NetApp Inc. The panel will be moderated by David Floyer.
