Micron moving up the stack: Watch live from Micron Summit 2017

With a global market expected to draw in $39 billion in revenue by 2022, the 3D NAND flash memory sector is projected to reach a CAGR of 33.7 percent in the next five years, according to a recent report from Allied Market Research. That’s a promising assessment for one of the market’s most active players, Micron Technology Inc. As the flash supplier moves up the value chain with improved systems integrations, Micron looks to address capacity issues in information technology infrastructure.

At this year’s Micron Summit in New York City, the company is expected to discuss market opportunities and challenges in today’s advanced computing environments. SiliconANGLE will be broadcasting the live webcast of the Micron Summit from our roving news desk, theCUBE.

“Micron’s a big flash supplier. They’ve become a more strategic player in the value chain. It appears they’re moving up the chain, now offering systems integrations. Flash product prices have been high, as there have been shortages. So Micron’s stock is cranking,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and chief research officer of the analyst group Wikibon, owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE.

Micron reported better-than-expected earnings for its second quarter, ending Mar. 2. The company reported earnings of $0.90 per share on revenues of $4.65 billion. For the current quarter ending in May, Micron is forecasting between $1.43 and $1.57 per share and revenues between $5.2 billion and $5.6 billion, well ahead of the consensus prior to the earnings report of $0.95 per share on revenues of $4.77 billion.

“The 3D flash coming in at a lower price point in the consumer space is hitting the enterprise space, and that shift between the two markets is causing huge demand for flash. That’s now hit a capacity issue — on the consumer and enterprise side. From Micron’s point of view, they’re invested in moving up the stack,” said David Floyer, chief technology officer of Wikibon.

To that end, Micron teamed up with Microsoft Corp. last month with the aim of addressing security issues with the Internet of Things ecosystem. Called Micron Authenta, the solution will secure the hardware that makes up the IoT. It integrates into Micron’s flash memory products built inside devices and sensors to establish trusted links between devices and Microsoft’s Azure IoT Cloud.
