Inside a ‘3-1-1’ platform for wide-ranging workplace management solutions

Weill Cornell Medicine, the biomedical research unit and medical school of Cornell University, has leveraged ServiceNow Inc.’s automated tools for human resources, case management, regulatory compliance for Environmental Health and Safety, and project and portfolio management, proving that the platform is more than just an IT service management tool. In fact, Weill Cornell Medicine has nicknamed the platform “the 3-1-1” thanks to its ability to provide management solutions across the workplace.

“It doesn’t make sense to buy these point products to do all these different workflows. Let’s buy a platform,” said Josh Gluck (pictured), deputy chief information officer at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Gluck spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during this year’s ServiceNow Knowledge17 event in Orlando, Florida. (* Disclosure below.)

How big does a business have to be to implement this type of platform? Mid-level companies and even small businesses should consider it, Gluck stated.

Because the platform is a hosted system and there is a wealth of partners in the community, Gluck said any type of business could benefit from it. “If you were a 10-person organization and you were customer focused, and you wanted to use it to do a couple of different business processes for you, it could make sense,” he said.

Gluck admitted that being part of an academic institution, Weill Cornell has tended to overthink and over-engineer in the past. But despite the complexity of its customizations, Gluck has no regrets about choosing to unwrap and go with ServiceNow.

“We definitely did the right thing at the right time,” he said.
