Watch live: Cisco’s software play targets developers at inaugural event

Looking to software-defined advancements in information technology networking, how is Cisco Systems Inc. looking to the developer community in pushing the agenda?

Looking to answer these questions and others, SiliconANGLE is at Cisco DevNet Create, which starts today in San Francisco, California, with live, exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. DevNet Create is Cisco’s inaugural developer conference, and the two-day event will bring together application developers, infrastructure engineers, designers, innovators, DevOps engineers and information technology professionals.

Cisco announced its sixth straight quarter of revenue declines this month but met analyst expectations for both revenue and earnings per share. As part of an expanded restructuring plan, the company also announced it would cut an additional 1,100 more jobs on top of the 5,500 it eliminated last August.

The company has been investing heavily in companies that could help it capitalize on trends like software-defined networking, cloud computing, analytics and artificial intelligence.

Cisco went on an acquisition spree earlier this month when it acquired Viptela Inc. and Saggezza Inc. in the same week. Rival SDN startup, Viptela was acquired for $610 million to complement Cisco’s own SDN technology, including its cloud-based Meraki products. The company acquired Saggezza’s advanced analytics and data science technology assets for an undisclosed fee.

This month also saw Cisco and NetApp Inc. join forces to invest millions into Datos IO Inc., a data management and protection platform that is just three years old. Despite being a young startup, which launched its data recovery product in June, Datos IO has managed to attract some big customers, including Ayla Networks Inc., Barracuda Networks Inc., eBay Inc. and OpenTable Inc.

TheCUBE will explore Cisco’s goals with regards to these acquisitions and investments at DevNet Create this week.

DevNet Create will also explore Cisco’s developments in 5G networks. Earlier this month, in what is being described as an industry first, Cisco, Samsung Electronics America Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. successfully demonstrated the deployment of a multivendor end-to-end 5G network field trial.

Keynote speakers at Cisco DevNet Create include Abby Kearns, executive director at Cloud Foundry Foundation; Jonathan Miles, principal network engineer at Choice Hotels International Inc.; Susie Wee, vice president and chief technology officer of DevNet Innovations at Cisco; Michael Stowe, director of community at Tigera Inc.; and Paul Greenberg, principal systems engineer and programmer at The Bank of New York Mellon Inc.

Other keynote speakers include Murray Newlands, online marketing and public relations expert at Chattypeople; Karina Popova, head of development at LINK Mobility GmbH; Ryan Boyd, head of developer relations at Neo Technology Inc.; Kinuko Masaki, chief executive officer of SmartEar Inc.; and Steven Pousty, lead developer evangelist at Red Hat Inc.
