Datameer enables deep learning on its business intelligence platform

Big data analytics player Datameer Inc. Wednesday unveiled a new SmartAI platform that uses Google Inc.’s TensorFlow machine learning framework to bring deep learning models to the enterprise.

Deep learning is a kind of unsupervised machine learning that has emerged as one of the most useful ways to obtain information from massive sets of unstructured data. It works by training very large neural networks, with hundreds or thousands of layers, atop speedy graphic processing unit chips. TensorFlow, meanwhile, is one of the most popular frameworks used to enable deep learning. So it’s no surprise that Datameer has decided to support the framework on its own analytics platform.

SmartAI doesn’t help data scientists to create deep learning models, which still need to be built with TensorFlow or another coding environment. Rather, what it does is help data scientists to overcome issues that often crop up when attempting to move TensorFlow-built models into production.

“With all the promise of data science and artificial intelligence, organizations have had difficulty delivering on its business value,” said John L. Myers, managing research director at Enterprise Management Associates. “Datameer’s SmartAI functionality enables organizations to connect the machine and deep learning models created by data scientists to information-rich data lakes to fulfill this promise.”

In a nutshell, SmartAI combines Datameer’s Hadoop-based data management and pipeline capabilities with TensorFlow to create an “end-to-end deep learning analytic cycle” that delivers faster and deeper business insights than before. It works by creating rich analytic pipelines that feed data into deep learning models built using TensorFlow. The end result is that companies can more easily integrate deep learning insights into their business applications and tools.

The company said these capabilities, combined with the automated security, governance and monitoring features built into its platform, mean that deep learning can finally be applied to enterprise data lake environments, no matter if they’re on-premises or hosted in the cloud.

Datameer reckons that SmartAI will lead to the democratization of data science, bringing deep learning from the lab into production-ready scenarios. This would help business analysts and decision makers to apply their deep learning models against the massive datasets held in enterprise data lakes, driving better business outcomes while applying enterprise-grade security and governance, the company said.

The company added that SmartAI allows users to shape and organize their data using its preparation features in order to speed up the time to insights. Users can also create deep learning models rapidly with just a few lines of code using TensorFlow, and train them much faster than before.

Datameer is also providing what it calls “trusted deep learning models” via its function library, so users can apply them to their data with a single click, meaning they don’t necessarily have to build their own.

“AI [artificial intelligence] is only as good as the data that feeds it,” said Datameer Chief Technology Officer Peter Voss.

The company said SmartAI will initially be available as a technical preview and asks that early adopters sign up here.
