It is no longer enough for companies to be sure they are safe from external attack. A comprehensive and up-to-date risk management strategy has to include monitoring employees who have the access to compromise systems and steal data.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.’s Aruba Niara User and Entity Behavior Analytics is one such solution, according to Dr. Jisheng Wang (pictured), senior director of data science, chief technology officer office, at HPE. It uses behavioral analytics to identify potential security risks from within the organization.

Wang spoke with David Goad (@davidgoad) and James Kobielus (@jameskobielus), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during this year’s Spark Summit event in San Francisco, California.

As well as in-depth information about UEBA and Niara’s capabilities, Wang also discussed incorporating machine learning into an ecosystem, the challenges integrating deep learning in Spark and the benefits to DevOps from simplifying the infrastructure.

IoT devices that make real-time decisions

With Internet of Things forecast to be a fast-growing market over the next few years, Wang sees integrating UEBA behavioral analytics and Spark capability into IoT portfolio at HPE as a big-picture priority that capitalizes on the advantages of being an established networking company. Having IoT devices that make real-time or close to real-time decisions is the goal, Wang pointed out.

Explaining the security value, Wang cited an example situation: “If an IP camera is compromised … we should detect and stop that at the first place.”

Spark Summit gives an opportunity for Wang to see how others are taking advantage of new technology to disrupt the old industry, and he is excited about deep learning integration in Spark. “I think they are on the right track,” he said.
