Codacy raises $5.1M to help developers find bugs faster

A significant portion of developers’ time is spent scouring their code for potential issues that may undermine application integrity. London-based Codacy is working to speed up the task, and today announced that it has raised $5.1 million in funding to support the effort.

The startup offers an automated code review platform that can scan application files for many common types of bugs. According to Codacy, the software can spot most everything from potential security problems to style violations that may make it difficult for developers to understand a certain snippet. Each problem is displayed — the complexity of the affected code, the estimated time to produce a fix and other contextual details.

When it comes to the bug itself, Codacy provides a detailed breakdown, including troubleshooting tips from popular developer sites such as Stack Overflow. According to the startup, this information not only speeds up resolution times but can also help newer members of a development team become familiar with company code guidelines.

Users may view the data provided by Codacy in a number of ways. The platform can embed bug information as a comment in a GitHub pull request, post the problem to Slack or compile its findings into an email. These options are designed to remove the need for developers to change their normal workflows.

In the background, Codacy aggregates the individual bug reports into a dashboard designed to provide a high-level view of projects. The console displays how thoroughly application components have been tested, the total number of unresolved issues and overall code complexity.

Codacy is used by hundreds of companies including Adobe Systems Inc., PayPal Holdings Inc. and Schneider Electric SE. TechCrunch reported that the startup will use the new funding to expand its team, which currently counts 13 staffers, in a bid to further grow its installed base.

The investment was led by a Swedish fund called EQT Ventures with participation from a number of returning backers. Codacy is among several venture-backed startups that are working to change how developers troubleshoot bugs in their projects. Another is PullRequest Inc., which entered the spotlight earlier this month with a platform that lets companies hire code review experts on-demand to assist internal personnel.
