Google, Pivotal partner to wield open-source, build consistent target for cloud developers

Working across clouds can be a tricky business. A company’s clouds might come from different providers, run in private or in public, or just be highly customized to work with mission-critical legacy applications. Building a common standard for working across cloud platforms will be crucial for the future of cloud, according to Sam Ramji (pictured), vice president of product management, Google Cloud Platform, at Google Inc.

“Inconsistency is the enemy in the data center. That’s what makes operations difficult,” Ramji said.

Ramji spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, during VMworld 2017 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed a recent Kubernetes announcement, the cloud and open-source tech. (* Disclosure below.)

New container standards for an open-hybrid cloud world

Google recently announced the results of its open-source work with Pivotal Software Inc. This work involves the Kubernetes container platform and the cluster-management software BOSH. The idea is to create one consistent target for compatibility in container services. This will greatly simplify the development process for companies and open-source contributors, according to Ramji.

In addition, this common standard also has another big benefit, Google services. The big G offers a wide range of powerful services over its cloud offerings, including machine learning and artificial intelligence capability. Google will make these services available out of the box right from launch, Ramji stated.

The new container technology also plays into Google’s strategy to provide an open-hybrid cloud. They recognize that compute belongs everywhere, be it in the cloud or in data centers, and look to support both.

“We’ve been die-hard committed to building out the open-source projects, the protocols to let all that information flow,” Ramji said.

Google works with open-source for more than just convenience. Open-source gives control to the customer, and Google has been very strong with building around customer choice. “It’s not about opening everything up. … It serves customers better, and in the long run, the better you serve customers, you’ll build a winning business,” Ramji concluded.
