Oracle joins Cloud Native Computing Foundation, adds new container services

As the excitement around software containers reaches fever pitch, database software giant Oracle Corp. is throwing its weight behind the cause.

The company said Wednesday it’s signing up as a platinum member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, the organization leading the development of the Kubernetes container orchestrator tool. In addition, the company has just made Kubernetes available on its Oracle Linux platform, and will also open-source a Terraform Kubernetes Installer for its cloud infrastructure.

Oracle said it’s joining the CNCF at a time when enterprises are increasingly turning toward open, container-based technology stacks as a way to build next-generation, cloud-native applications. The company said that by joining the CNCF, it’s signaling its support for these efforts and the Kubernetes community at large.

“Kubernetes is the future of cloud container orchestration and management, and Oracle is committed to improving the technology to make enterprise adoption easier than ever,” said Mark Cavage, vice president of software development at Oracle.

One of the first steps Oracle is taking in this direction is to open-source its automated Kubernetes Terraform Template for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The tool is designed to simplify the installation of Kubernetes on Oracle’s cloud-based, bare-metal servers on which companies can install all their own software, the company said.

In addition to the installer, Oracle is releasing a new product called Oracle Linux Container Services, which aims to simplify the configuration and setup of Kubernetes on Oracle Linux-based public clouds, private clouds and on-premises environments. Oracle said the new services are available as an extension to its existing Oracle Linux and Oracle Linux Container Services for Docker, and come with a “streamlined installation model” so developers can get Kubernetes up and running in just a few minutes.

“By joining the CNCF, we’re making it easier for enterprises to leverage the power of container-native technology to simplify their infrastructure environments to run in true hybrid cloud mode – in any cloud,” Cavage added.
