Splice Machine’s database management platform lands on Amazon cloud

Hybrid database management system provider Splice Machine Inc. hit an important milestone on Monday with the release of its database as a service platform on the Amazon Web Services Inc. Marketplace.

Splice Machine’s DBaaS platform is aimed at enterprises that want to build new, next-generation “predictive applications,” the company said. Predictive apps are those that employ new technologies such as machine learning and data analytics to learn from the past. In addition, predictive apps leverage data streaming and traditional transactional capabilities to work in real time, performing tasks such as preventive maintenance on Internet of Things devices and predicting late orders for manufacturing, among other uses.

Splice Machine said it has received “very positive” feedback from early adopters, highlighting the platform’s ability to easily configure, provision and deploy predictive applications, as well as its speed, performance and scalability.

George Gilbert, big data and analytics analyst at Wikibon, owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE Media Inc., agreed that the platform has lots of potentials. “By creating a tightly integrated cloud-based data platform, Splice Machine is providing the foundation for a new generation of applications that are continuously learning, predicting and acting to produce optimum business outcomes,” he said.

Splice Machine said that one of its DBaaS platform’s biggest advantages is its support for the popular Structured Query Language, an industry standard database language. This support means customers can easily move their existing applications to Splice Machine’s platform on AWS.

The company also highlighted some other features of its new platform, including elastic scalability along with pay-as-you-go pricing, and hybrid transactional and analytical processing that allows for simultaneous online transactional and online analytical processing. In addition, the platform also provides artificial intelligence and data science services, so users can easily ingest data from IoT devices and apply machine learning to analyze that data and develop and deploy new models.

“The days of static applications are over,” said Monte Zweben, co-founder and chief executive officer of Splice Machine. “Modern applications need to learn from the past, predict the future, plan based on those predictions, and then act in the moment. For such applications, Splice Machine offers an easy-to-use, powerful service in the cloud with the functionality that serves users’ needs.”
