Watch live at Big Data Week NYC: Software is eating the edge

The annual Wikibon Presentation & Party takes place on Wednesday, September 27, in New York City during Big Data Week. Presented by Wikibon Research (Wikibon Inc. is owned by the same parent company as SiliconANGLE Media Inc.) in association with the Strata Data Conference, this year’s theme is “Software Is Eating the Edge — The Entangling of Big Data and IIoT.”

It has been six years since Marc Andreessen, co-founder and general partner of Andreessen Horowitz LLC, penned his famous “Why Software Is Eating the World” essay in “The Wall Street Journal.” Andreessen’s prediction is still true today, especially in the unstoppable penetration of artificial intelligence software into every niche of the digital economy, in particular, edge apps on the “industrial internet of things.”

“Indeed, if software’s going to eat the world, we must especially understand how software’s going to eat the edge,” said Peter Burris, chief research officer at Wikibon, as the edge is the most complex environment software has ever been built for, requiring significant adjustments to how we think about software and software businesses.

“Machine learning, AI and deep learning make an impact on creating models that run on increasingly powerful hardware closer to the edge and at various points throughout a network,” Burris said. How will tasks be deployed for this architecture?”

Increasingly, AI-infused software can imbue every mobile, sensor and other edge devices with amazingly intelligent capabilities, but wrong steps can crush customer experience or upend operations. How should a business dine on software-enabled opportunities?

What to expect

Looking to answer these questions and others, Wikibon’s research will be presented by Peter Burris and Wikibon’s Lead Analysts Neil Raden and James Kobielus. The research will focus on how businesses can ensure a balanced diet of pragmatism and aggressive pursuit of software-enabled opportunities.

Burris will kick off the Wikibon Presentation with his talk, entitled “The Essential Digital Business Capabilities.”

Raden will discuss “Harvesting Value at the Edge,” while Kobielus will talk about “How Software Will Eat the Edge.”

The second half of the Wikibon Presentation will be a “Big Data and IIoT Influencer Panel” with industry influencers who will discuss best practices and potential pratfalls as businesses weave together big data and IIoT.
